All requests and Vendor bids for Wireless device installation must be reviewed by the Information Technology department and approved by the Provost of Technology. The Information Technology department will review vendor installation drawings and assist with site surveys to determine equipment requirements and placement. Prior to vendor installation, all equipment will be delivered to the ATM for configuration and WEP key settings. If you are considering purchasing "Wireless" for your department, please contact Barbara Tibbs ext. 6736.

Approved Wireless device minimal features:

To insure security and maintain network capability all wireless devices placed on the Hampton University network will be 802.11b compliant and offer the management features listed below.

Adjustable power output SNMP community naming
Read/Write setting capabilities 40 or 128-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
SSID (Service Set ID) Directional Antennas (note1)

Hampton University's RFC standard's compliant vendor is Cisco.

Power settings:

A typical wireless device will broadcast more than 100 feet indoor, 500 feet outdoors. The Information Technology department will set Hampton University devices, to broadcast no more than necessary, beyond the approved coverage area. The reason for this requirement is two folds, to keep unauthorized users from gaining access and to prevent approved user from "stepping on each other".

Basic Service Area:

802.11b standards. define 11 channels for use, with wireless data networks. Three of these channels, are non-overlapping; use of overlapping channels, can cause packet collision and degrade the entire network. The Information Technology department will maintain an Extended cell, Campus topology map, to ensure all wireless devices are properly channeled and not "stepping on each other."

(NOTE 1) Dipole 'Standard Rubber Duck' antennas come with the Access points at no extra cost. Directional 'Patch' antennas are an additional $180 (approx.). If mounted on the wall 'Dipole's' will broadcast a near equal distance outside the wall. Directional antennas may be required, if more than 3 wireless pods are to be installed in one department.
