University College of Virginia Beach . Users can access the library's
resources from the Virginia Beach campus library, their offices, or homes.

1. How
do I find and check out materials that are owned by the Harvey Library
?
- Use Harvey Library's Online
Catalog(HUWebCat) to search for items in the collection.
- Click on Online Catalog on
Harvey Library's home page. The Catalog
contains items in the Harvey Library as
well as in the Nursing
and Architecture satellite libraries.
- Once you have
performed a search in WebCat and have found a book that you would
like to borrow, click on the "VIEW"button next to the record
number.
- Click on "Jump
to location/availability information."
If the book shows a location of STACKS, then click on the the "REQUEST"
button.
- Next, click on
the link "PLACE A HOLD."
- Your UserID is
the Library Bar Code Number on your library card OR you must fill
in the Alternate ID which is your Social Security number.
- Enter your PIN
number which is the last 4 digits of your SS#.
- Then click on
"pick up at" and choose the option "Virginia Beach
Campus Library."
- Click on the
"PLACE HOLD" button.
- The book you
have placed on hold will be delivered to the Hampton University College
of Virginia Beach Information Resource Center for you to pick it up.
The Harvey Library has three collections
that are non-circulating : Reference,the Peabody Collection, and the
Government
Documents Depository.
2. How
do I get journal articles?
- Databases : Harvey Library subscribes
to over 120 different databases that contain either fulltext or citations
for journal articles, books, and other electronic resources. In some
cases you will be able to directly download fulltext articles from
the databases. See Question 3 for remote access.
- E-Journal Finder: search or browse
fulltext online periodicals that Harvey Library subscribes to. You
will be able to directly download fulltext articles from the E-Journal
Finder. See Question 3 for remote access.
- Interlibrary Loan
and ILLIAD are the
mechanisms for obtaining journal articles that are not available online
or for document delivery of articles from print journals owned by
Harvey Library.
- Print Journals:
If you choose to visit the Harvey Library, the print journals collection
is located on the 2nd Floor
3. How do I connect to Harvey Library's
resources remotely?
- All of the databases
and some of the electronic resources offered through WebCat are restricted
to registered students, staff, and faculty at Hampton University and
the College of Virginia Beach.
- When you try to access a database remotely you will be prompted
for your Hampton University Network Account UserName and Password.
If you do not have an established account, please contact the Information
Technology Department at the Virginia Beach Campus at (757) 637-2413.
4. How
do I request and receive materials that are not available from Harvey
Library?
- Interlibrary Loan is
a service which obtains materials from other libraries that are not
available in the Harvey Library's print and electronic collections.
- ILLIAD
is a service provided for the use of current Hampton University students,
faculty, and staff to request materials that are not owned by the
Harvey Library. You can open an ILLIAD
account through the Harvey Library Webpage.
- In most cases
journal articles will be accessible through your ILLiad account.
- Books (and some
journal articles) will be delivered by courier on a daily basis for
pick-up at the College of Virginia Beach Information Resource Center.

do I contact staff and/or librarians at Harvey Library?
- Contacting the Librarians : This list provides
phone numbers and email addresses of the librarians. Library liaisons
designated by the library work closely with the academic departments
at Hampton University in providing information about new resources,
selecting library materials to support the curriculum, offering research
consultations, and providing instruction to students and faculty in
using those materials effectively.

do I get research assistance from a Librarian at Harvey Library?
- Reference Desk:
call us at (757) 727- 5379 . Refer to this page for hours of operation.
- Use E-Reference
and send the librarians your questions by email to ereference@hamptonu.edu.
- Harvey Library offers its patrons real-time help from library staff
by providing an online chat service with a librarian. To get live
help online from a Reference Librarian, click on Chat
Online on the Harvey Library homepage.
This service will be available October 1, 2003.
