Library Instruction

Harvey Library’s library instruction program provides hands–on training to students and campus faculty in the use of library resources. Librarians work with HU faculty to provide customized library instruction for courses. Goals include helping students learn to find information through Harvey Library and the web, as well as helping them learn to evaluate and effectively use the information they find.

Assignment based library instruction sessions are tailored to the needs of the faculty member requesting the instruction.

Find information for requesting library instructional services for your class in the Library Instructional Services page.

Research Consultation

Harvey Library offers one-on-one consultations to support student research needs, and works with individuals who require the assistance of a librarian on a specific research topic/paper.

All the librarians are trained and available to assist students in finding research materials from all types of sources, both printed and electronic for term papers, group projects, theses etc.

The librarians can assist students, both at the undergraduate or graduate level, to formulate a search strategy and to find appropriate research materials. They can help design a search strategy; pick the best avenues to find sources; choose the best terminology and help students evaluate the results of searches.

Librarians can be contacted through phone, email or in person and a listing of phone numbers and email links can be found on the Library’s home page, under the Librarian Liaison List.

Placing Items on Reserve

Faculty can place materials on reserve at the Circulation Desk by following these guidelines:

Note: Academic Reserves are held for 1 semester unless extended by the instructor. They are returned to the instructor by campus mail if the Circulation staff does not recieve notification of an extension.

  • Register as a library borrower by presenting your Hampton University ID.
  • Fill out and sign the required Reserve Request and Copyright & Fair Use forms.
  • For each item, specify the type of reserve (CLOSED for two-hour in-house use, OVERNIGHT LOAN, or THREE DAY LOAN). The preferred type is CLOSED.
  • Provide one copy of each item for every 15 students enrolled in the class.
  • Each photocopied article must display or cite it's source and copyright on the first page.
  • Allow a few days from the time the request is made until items are available for use. Materials received after 5 PM Monday through Friday will not be processed until the next business day.

What Can Be Placed On Reserve?

The following can stay on reserve for one semester:

  • Library materials from the open stacks.
  • Personal copies of books, journal and newspaper articles, and audiovisual materials.
  • Photocopies subject to copyright and fair use laws.
  • NOTE: Materials received through Interlibrary Loan cannot be placed on reserve.

Copyright Information

  • All reserve items must adhere to the United States Copyright Law (Title 17, US Code).
  • US copyright law obligates a person to seek permission of the copyright holder before making or using multiple photocopies of copyrighted works published within the last 75 years.
  • It is library policy that copyright permissions and royalty fees be obtained and paid by the individual or department requesting reserve services. This can be accomplished in one of the following ways: provide the library a copy of the letter seeking permission from the copyright holder to use the work and/or the response (Sample permission letters are available at the Circulation Desk) provide proof that royalty fees have been paid.
