In addition to being one of the top historically black universities in the world, Hampton University is a tightly-knit community of learners and educators, representing 49 states and 35 territories and nations. The Department of Music at Hampton University, which houses the BA in Music Performance, BS in Music Recording Technology, BA in Music (Pre-Certification) and BS in Music Audio Production degrees, is seeking to fill an Assistant professor level position in Music beginning Fall 2019.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate must be committed to providing instruction for applied lessons, various eras of music history, small woodwind ensembles, humanities courses and other relevant courses assigned by the department chair.  Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to advise music majors and hold office hours.  While actively teaching, faculty are encouraged to participate in the creative activity of performance and other scholarly research including grantsmanship.  In addition, candidates should demonstrate dedication to the progress of the Music Department, the School of Liberal Arts and Education, and the University as a whole, through service activities.

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate an active research and performance agenda, potential for, or record of externally funded research activity, and commitment to quality teaching and mentoring of students.

A candidate holding the doctoral degree in Musicology or Performance and with proficiency  on an instrument in the woodwind family is preferred.  Consideration will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree, although there is an expectation of hiring at the Assistant Professor rank.  Filling the position at a different rank depends on the qualifications and experience of the applicant.  Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Qualified candidates should submit a completed Application for Faculty Employment, a cover letter specifically addressing suitability for the position, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy and research interests, publication reprints and official transcripts from the institution awarding the highest degree.  Completed application materials must be mailed to:
