The Hampton University Department of Fine and Performing Arts invites nominations and applications for a full time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 26, 2019.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts, offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in art and theatre, and is a viable, innovative, multi-faceted program designed to meet the current and future needs of Hampton University students. The eight semester (four year) curriculum in the area of theatre leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree in either Performance or Technical.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teach 12 credit hours per semester in the areas of theatre. Oversee all operational aspects of the costume shop, costume storage, dressing rooms, and costume design program. Design and produce all costumes and makeup for all Department and Hampton Players and Company productions. Be present at rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances, overseeing all aspects of costuming. Collaborate with faculty and administrators on strategic planning, program development, student advising, assessment of student learning, student recruiting and retention, and committee service. Attend and assist with extracurricular events that promote the University’s visual and performing arts programs. Remain current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further scholarly research, and creative scholarship. Instructor will be expected to maintain current trends in the costume design field and lead program development as the field changes.




Minimum qualifications are Master’s degree in costume design or a closely related field from an accredited institution including a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the coursework specifically related to costume design. Demonstrated achievement as a costume designer through a portfolio that documents professions activity and productions. Demonstrated achievement as an arts educator through a portfolio that documents student work. Proficiency in teaching costume design, makeup design, and practical skills in theatre. Ability to teach practical sewing skills (hand stitching and sewing machine) and makeup application required. Excellent communication and leadership skills.
