The Hampton University William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library invites nominations and applications for the position of Coordinator of Instructional Services & Reference Librarian.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The mission of the university libraries is to support the instructional, research and service needs of the Hampton University community. This is achieved through access and delivery of information services and resources that are essential to academic and teaching excellence, leadership and lifelong learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position coordinates information literacy, instructional and references services for the university libraries. Specific duties are as follow:

1. Plan and develop information literacy curriculum, initiatives and services.

2. Serve as Reference Services Supervisor and Coordinator.

3. Develop online training materials that teach users to effectively use information resources.

4. Conduct evaluation and assessment activities relative to library instruction learning outcomes and program assessment.

5. Maintain statistical data and prepare reports relative to library instruction and reference services.

6. Collaborate with faculty to impact the development of students’ information literacy skills.

7. Provide reference and instruction services to the user community including some evenings and weekends.

8. Participate in collection development and serve as library liaison to assigned departments.

9. Participate in the development and enforcement of policies and procedures that ensure the effective and efficient operation of the library.

10. Develop and implement new services and programs to meet the needs of the user community in coordination with other librarians.

11. Serve as an advocate for the library by serving on library, university and regional committees and by participating in professional development activities.

12. Perform other duties as assigned in order to advance the strategic goals of the library in connection with the strategic goals of the university.


An ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science is required for this position. Additional qualifications include the following:

  1. Experience teaching information literacy.

  2. Experience designing information literacy instructional resources and tools.

  3. Experience in creation and effective usage of assessment.

  4. Experience in supervision of a library department, unit or team.

  5. Ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.

  6. Strong commitment to service and teamwork.

  7. Excellent oral and written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
