The Financial Aid Specialist will be responsible for providing the delivery of the Title IV federal aid programs, Virginia state aid programs, as well as institutional aid programs, in accordance with program rules and regulations and Hampton University policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advising students about educational costs and financial management, including loans and grants, financing options, and other financial aid related matters, including debt management and financial planning;
  • Counseling students about paying for an education at HU; with increased emphasis on making contact with every prospective or continuing student, whether in-person, via email or by phone;
  • Reviewing all federal financial aid applications randomly selected for verification by the Department of Education; verifying the accuracy of financial aid documents, and federal tax transcripts, resolving conflict data, and making the necessary corrections, as appropriate, or denying aid if eligible;
  • Calculating satisfactory academic progress for all students applying (especially for returning students);
  • Maintaining and updating financial aid compliance reference resources for complying with the multitude of requirements under the Higher Education Act (HEA), as amended;
  • Making available financial literacy materials for students, in accordance with the Student Consumer Information provision, under the HEA, as amended;
  • Demonstrating (at all times) a positive attitude and professional demeanor, and a sincere willingness to adapt to rapid change within the work environment;
  • Possessing experience with the Banner Ellucian Financial Aid Software is a plus.
  • Willing to join the Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (VASFAA), for purpose of professional development, and staying of abreast of periodic changes relating to administration of student aid.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • One (1) year of related work experience
  • Word processing skills
  • Basic math skills
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
  • Must be aware of and sensitive to cultural differences
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to travel within the service area and out of town to attend training, conferences, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s (or higher) degree or successful completion of sixty (60) college credit hours
  • Two (2) years of experience working in Financial Aid, Student Services, and/or accounting/bookkeeping
  • Banner experience
  • Familiar with government processes pertaining to financial aid
