A full-time research technician position is available at the Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI) is focused on defining the mechanisms underlying dermatological pathologies affecting individuals with skin of color. Projects involve the use of mammalian cell-based models and the zebrafish as an animal model. This will require research techniques in biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology. Excellent grades and experimental experience in these disciplines are expected. Training will be provided for the daily care and use of the zebrafish model.

The successful candidate is expected to perform laboratory procedures for cell culture, molecular biology and cell biology. This will involve the use of specialized equipment for each assay. These assays include the use of imaging equipment to capture biological data using fluorescent microscopy. Additional assays include instruments for analysis/quantitation of protein/DNA/RNA. Training will be provided for the use of the zebrafish model, including microinjections, transplantation and genotyping. This position requires good communication with members of the lab and good organizational skills. Interest in the research projects and clear understanding of experimental goals are expected through data presentation at lab meetings. This individual will participate in sharing zebrafish care on a rotational basis. He/she will meet with the PI(s) on a weekly basis to update on progress of experiments and to problem-solve facility/technical issues. * This is a grant-funded position.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. The candidate will participate in the shared responsibility for the zebrafish housing facility. Reliability is essential and the candidate will be required to share their mobile number with the administrative staff in the event of emergencies requiring immediate attention.

2. The successful candidate is familiar with DNA and RNA isolation and can perform routine PCR reactions and qPCR. Proficiency in performing laboratory experiments independently using mammalian cell culture or zebrafish is expected after a short period of training. Techniques will include immunofluorescence, western blotting, cell or tissue staining. Record keeping is essential for this position. Lab notes must be updated on a daily basis.

3. The successful candidate will also need to maintain/calibrate and replace, as necessary, lab equipment and disposable items, keep detailed records and help organize lab reagents.

4. The successful candidate will be required to maintain fish lines for current projects and monitor fish health.


  • Please provide at least 3 letters of reference that confirms his/her abilities and have the flexibility and social skills to work with lab personnel and the PI.


  • A Bachelor’s degree or 2 years of relevant lab experience.
  • The candidate is expected to have a strong background in biomedical sciences in order to understand the significance of the experiments being conducted.
