A full-time research technician position is available at the Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI). HUSCRI is focused on defining the mechanisms underlying dermatological pathologies affecting individuals with skin of color. Research projects involve the use of mammalian cell-based models and the zebrafish as an animal model. The successful candidate is a highly responsible and reliable individual who will provide immediate support to expedite HUSCRI research progress. Duties include zebrafish care, laboratory organization and monitoring of reagents and supplies. Flexible hours are expected from the successful candidate for weekend and holiday zebrafish feeding and experimental needs. Strong letters of recommendation demonstrating responsibility and reliability from previous supervisors are expected. Excellent grades are expected in relevant disciplines such as biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology are expected while experimental experience would be a bonus. Proficiency in current biomedical research uses of zebrafish and cell biology techniques are expected upon training.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to become an independent research technician at HUSCRI. Duties will include zebrafish feeding and maintenance of the zebrafish facility. This position requires a flexible schedule, as it will require weekend and holiday work, as well as good communication with members of the lab, and excellent organizational skills. As with all members of HUSCRI, the candidate should be able to lift at least 30 pounds for water tanks and reagent stocks and shipments.

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. The candidate will be responsible for the zebrafish housing facility. Reliability is essential and the candidate will be required to share their mobile number with the administrative staff in the event of emergencies requiring immediate attention.

2. The successful candidate is organized and reliable. Record keeping is essential for this position. The facility uses a sophisticated automated monitoring system 24/7, this technician will check and record parameters to assess system function and fish health on a daily basis.

3. The successful candidate will also need to maintain/calibrate and replace, as necessary, lab equipment and disposable items, and provide general cleanliness and precautionary disinfections of counter spaces, sinks, door handles as per covid19 guidelines.

4. The successful candidate will keep careful records of lab work, reagents, dates of purchase and expiry dates, as well as general lab organization.


A Bachelor’s degree or 2 years of relevant lab experience. Please provide at least 3 letters of reference that confirms his/her work ethics, reliability and responsibility, learning abilities and have the flexibility and social skills to work with lab personnel and the PI.
