The Hampton University Department of Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing Education invites nominations and applications for the Director of the Office of Student Academic Support Services position projected start date July 1, 2021.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.  The Department of Undergraduate Nursing Education has 129 years of educating future nurses.

The Director of the Office of Student Academic Support Services (OSASS) supervises the academic counselors and coordinates all office activities. In addition, the director participates in academic advisement for undergraduate students in the pre-Professional and fist two years of the Health Sciences degree programs. The director reports directly to the Dean and supports the Chairpersons of the Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing departments. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages pre-admission and application process students
  • Serves as academic advisor for all Pre-Professional nursing students
  • Complete tentative plans for graduation for Pre-Professional nursing and undergraduate Health Sciences students
  • Inform students of the application process for admission to the Professional nursing program as well as the clinical clearance process and assist with how to obtain the necessary documentation
  • Conducts advisement /registration activities for students
  • Corresponds with potential students
  • Recruits at high schools, technical schools and community colleges
  • Submit monthly recruitment report to the Dean’s Office
  • Conducts Freshman, Transfer and Progression orientations and prospective student information sessions
  • Plans and coordinates information sessions for prospective undergraduate and graduate students
  • Maintains scholarship applications database, assists with evaluation of applications based on criteria, and prepare report for Undergraduate Scholarship, Standards, and Admissions Committee
  • Organizes recruitment calendar, coordinates activities, and participates in recruitment events
  • Evaluate transcripts of transfer students
  • Develop Degree Plans for military students and tentative schedule of graduation for all students
  • Manages/evaluates undergraduate student academic data related to progression, probation, and dismissal
  • Prepares audits and academic clearance for graduating seniors
  • Prepares necessary paperwork for graduates to be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN
  • Prepares letters and memo’s for students or pertaining to students for review by Dean
  • Contributes to the preparation of various required University and external academic reports
  • Serves on standing committees in the School of Nursing by appointment
  • Serves as liaison between the University Admissions Office and the Office of Student Academic Support Services
  • Attends appropriate meetings
  • Provides support activities for all School programs and activities
  • Collects and maintains statistical data in database for School of Nursing reports
  • Maintains course data and course projections
  • Updates literature on academic programs

 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Masters  degree in the Sciences or Arts
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and management skills
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the School and the University
  • Technological literacy (i.e. MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint ) and a commitment to integrate technology into work product
