The Department of Marine and Environmental Science in the School of Science at Hampton University invites applications for a nine-month tenure track faculty position in Marine and Environmental Science, at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2022.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located in the City of Hampton on the James River drainage of the Chesapeake Bay. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.

The department is also growing a joint graduate (Masters) program with the Department of Biological Sciences. Our faculty members have diverse research interests and currently lead both research and training programs funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Education Partnership Program and the National Science Foundation. These include internationally recognized multi-decadal training and experiential grants as well as highly competitive, nationally recognized research awards.  Early Career faculty members in the Department currently hold highly prestigious Research Initiation and CAREER Awards from the National Science Foundation. The successful candidate is thus expected to likewise develop a vibrant, productive, and nationally recognized research program funded by competitive state, federal, and/or private sources.

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates with highly productive research backgrounds in terrestrial, aquatic, and/or geosciences and an interest in developing a local research program training students in Virginia’s Coastal Plain and its watersheds will be considered.  Candidates with research experience in green energy technology, environmental ecology, and/or wetland restoration ecology are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications from candidates from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in the aquatic and environmental sciences are likewise highly encouraged. We seek candidates committed to inclusive excellence in teaching, with demonstrated ability to teach and mentor a diverse range of students from underrepresented backgrounds in the aquatic and environmental sciences. This position carries the standard teaching load at Hampton University: 12 credits (4 courses) per semester. The successful candidate will teach field and laboratory courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels drawn from the fields of ecology, environmental science, conservation biology and resource management, as well as the quantitative and geospatial sciences. The successful candidate will train students in funded research projects, including mentorship of both undergraduate and Masters theses.
