The Technical Support Assistant serves as a key interface between Computer Center staff who manage the University’s student information system and Operations Analysis and Research (OAR) staff. This position is responsible for developing database queries in Banner to gather and compile large datasets; working with internal and external sources to monitor data integrity; and maintaining confidentiality and integrity of data and information. Incumbents also participates in research project design, data collection, and analysis; develops procedures for the solution of well-defined, routine business problems and then converts these procedures into applications and programs required for computer solutions; and researches new technologies to streamline office processes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and manages the daily activities of the OAR database applications development operation.

  • Attends regular planning meetings with Technology team; establishes short and long range goals; and provides regular progress reports to OAR.

  • Primary responsibility includes download of student specific data as required by the state of Virginia in the format (record layout) as designated by SCHEV for upload and locking compliance. The General Assembly of VA has several mandates for reporting under the Restructured Act of VA TAG Act 23.38.11 and Code of VA 23.276.2.

  • Designs, develops and implement programs which monitor, analyze, and/or enhance Banner and other software.

  • Develops and maintains a system for regulatory and compliance reporting (IPEDS, SCHEV, etc.)

  • Evaluates the scope of proposed database applications project; recommends to OAR whether applications should be developed in-house or purchased commercially; evaluates commercially available applications; and provides recommendations.

  • Compile, analyze, interpret and report data findings to facilitate the use of data and information.

  • Provides technical expertise in formula development, modeling, forecasting, and trends analysis, and provides technical and analytic support for special projects.

  • Designs and implements large-scale, complex, custom database applications that meet user requirements using Access and Oracle programming tools.

  • Develops training materials and presents formal training sessions to various employee groups.

  • This position reports to Director of Operations Analysis and Research and works in concert with the Reports and Data Coordinator.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's Degree with emphasis in data and information management in one or more of the following: computer science, social science, research methodology, or statistics is required. The ability to perform basic programming, debugging, data and system analysis required. Must possess extensive working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of relational database design, SQL, and database applications development/support using Microsoft Access and Oracle. Experience routinely accessing and querying enterprise data using effective tools or applications. Knowledge of Banner system (is desirable). Ability and willingness to quickly learn new tools and technologies. Good written, oral, and people skills necessary. The ability to work in a multilevel management system is desirable.


A basic knowledge of the following is desirable:

  • Knowledge of SQL scripting – for data extraction, reporting, and the removal, editing or addition to data.

  • Knowledge of Banner System (Ellucian’s administrative software application for higher education institutions).

  • Knowledge of TOAD for Oracle – Oracle database tool.

  • Knowledge of Atomic (formerly UC4 and APPWORX) – job scheduler
