The Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI) invites nominations and applications for a Scientific Director beginning immediately.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. In 2008, Hampton University established a new and unique research institute on its campus, focused on improving the knowledge and treatment of skin disorders which disproportionately affect individuals with skin of color (SOC, including Africans, African Americans, Asians, Native Americans, and Hispanics). Research at HUSCRI is focused on defining the mechanisms underlying dermatological disorders. Our mission is to conduct research, disseminate knowledge, and to improve the understanding and treatment of skin disorders.

Duties and Responsibilities

Hampton University is seeking an established investigator for the position of Scientific Director at the Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI). The Scientific Director will lead a research team to investigate the mechanisms underlying selected SOC dermatological disorders. The appointee’s primary activity will be to conduct academic research in association with Research Post-Doctoral Fellow, a Research Associate, a Research Technician, and an Office Manager.

The appointee is an experienced and well-funded academic scientist with a distinguished career in medical research in the areas of pigmentation, fibrosis and/or immunity. Working with HUSCRI’s Clinical Directors, the successful individual will design dermatological research projects, generate funding through federal and non-federal sources. The Scientific Director contributes to the selection of the other members of the HUSCRI research team to recruit individuals with complementary expertise who will be able to accelerate research progress.


Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, at least 10 years of experience as an independent research scientist, demonstrated top tier publications, and success in obtaining federal funding as Principal Investigator. Compensation commensurate with experience.
