The Director will be responsible for identifying, designing and implementing curriculum, best practices training models and other advising/mentoring services that will best meet Commonwealth-wide entrepreneurship incubation needs. Oversight of and responsibility for success of three identified training tracks, business planning, licensure and certification.

This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight of innovation and entrepreneurship operations for the VWIEC.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan to facilitate productive evidence-based partnerships; lead and support the development of a culture of innovation.
  • Ensure that the VWIEC operations are integrated and coordinated so that staff are supported by service-oriented employees responsible for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship; support participants’ innovation by developing and maintaining simple and clear processes that support entrepreneurs.
  • Assist with business curriculum planning development and work closely with the Director of Implementation.
  • Ensure a responsive and engaging learning processes that links participants with opportunities and the needs of potential external partners.
  • Establish and track metrics that illustrate VWIEC’s support and successes in knowledge transfer.
  • Engage, foster, develop and grow strategic partnerships and collaborations that enhance the University’s competencies, reputation and economic impact.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external public- and private-sector entities including local, federal and state agencies, national research centers, foundations, business, and industry.
  • Manage multiple ongoing projects with differing degrees of complexity and varying scales.
  • Collaborate closely with other offices and provide leadership across the University.
  • Work with VWIEC communications staff to enhance internal and external communications about the university’s commercialization and tech transfer processes and successes.Support growth and program development by external grants.
  • Develop innovative programming to support the innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives with stakeholders across the Commonwealth of VA.
  • Facilitate participant interest and success in the practice of entrepreneurship and mutually-enhancing relationship development.
  • As assigned by the Executive Director, to serve as a spokesperson for the VWIEC at local, state and national meetings and conferences.
  • Development and implementation of strategies to assist in measureable Innovation and Entrepreneurship outcomes for participants.
  • Participate in and assure quality teaching and training of Incubator students and connect them with business and alumni sponsors and mentors, as needed
  • Serve as a VWIEC liaison for the Entrepreneurship Faculty at Hampton University, Old Dominion University and other partnering institutions and building strong diverse lines of communication, therein.
  • Mentor students on educational and programming opportunities, including academic options, conferences, competitions, and about the importance of innovation and entrepreneurial excellence through diversity.
  • Nurture and build diverse networks of supporters of the VWIEC and its participants.
  • Foster development of programming focusing on positive interactions among diverse populations and maximizing the benefits of multicultural and inclusive perspectives.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.


  • Prior work experience in higher education and/or professional experience, including five years of first-person experience in startups or small business.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and delivering educational entrepreneurship programs is preferred.
  • Demonstrated accountability for innovation and entrepreneurship outcomes.
  • The candidate should provide evidence of successfully collaborating with diverse students, faculty, communities, and governmental (local, state and federal) agencies.
  • The successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to work as part of a diverse team.
  • A Master’s degree is required.
