The Hampton University Department of Chemical Engineering within the School of Engineering and Technology invites nominations and applications for a full-time Research Assistant Professor position. The appointment is expected by January 2022.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University (www.hamptonu.edu) is located onapproximately 300acres of the Virginia Peninsula. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredit all programs. Hampton University, a member of the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) community of higher education institutions, is currently enjoying tremendous growth and development from a traditionally teaching to a more research-intensive institution. Hampton University is a Ph.D. level institution of higher learning with a primarily undergraduate student population of 3,516 students pursuing degrees in diverse areas of study.


The research assistant professor will assist the Principal Investigator in a federally funded research project. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting and evaluating research in the field of hydrogel for tissue engineering and regeneration for bone loss applications. The position duties may require independent oversight of research projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research and technical activities related to ongoing projects in the laboratory involving the design, fabrication, and characterization of hydrogel for bone loss applications. Responsibility is functional in nature and needs to be performed under limited supervision. Specific tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Designing and characterization of hydrogels
  2. Designing and executing cellular and molecular laboratory experiments.
  3. Collecting and analyzing test results
  4. Preparing laboratory reports and manuscripts for publication
  5. Aiding the supervisor in training new lab members (graduates, undergraduates, and high school) and assisting them as needed
  6. Assisting in managing lab equipment and provide technical expertise if needed to lab members.


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Biomedical, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical, Tissue Engineering or related fields.


Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience in the design and characterization of hydrogels and must have worked with primary cell lines.

Candidates who possess one or more of the following skills and abilities are strongly encouraged to apply:

  1. Isolation and culture of primary cells, and maintenance of mammalian cell lines (MSCs, osteoblasts or any other cells lines)
  2. Advanced knowledge of processes and procedures of cell and molecular biology techniques such as qRT-PCR, imaging, cytotoxicity assays, immunohistochemistry, proliferation assays, histology, ELISA, SEM, mechanical testing etc.

Compensation for this position will be at or close to the NIH pay scale and commensurate with experience. It will also include fringe benefits offered by Hampton University. This is a full-time position available immediately and will be funded for 1.5 -2 years with the possibility of renewal depending upon the progress achieved and continued funding.
