The Department of Music and Performing Arts (MAPA) at Hampton Universityhouses bachelor degree programs in Music Performance,  Music Education (Pre-Certification), Music Recording Technology and  Audio Production, all of which are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. MAPA also houses programs in Theatre Performance and Technical Theatre.  A competent individual is being sought to fill the position of Chairperson for MAPA and Assistant Professor of Music beginning Fall 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate must have leadership experience that would reflect the candidate’s ability to manage two arts areas (Music and Theatre) as well as directors of performing organizations including University Bands, Choirs, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Band, the Musical Arts Society, and the Hampton Players. The Chairperson will also manage service courses in oral communication and humanities. In addition, the Chairperson has teaching responsibilities in an area of specialty (vocal or Instrumental Music, Musicology, or other specialty areas in music).The Chairperson supervises student advisement, evaluation of faculty and staff, budgets,  curricula, class scheduling/staffing, student recruitment, music  and theatre equipment, inventories, and sustaining  NASM accreditation. The Chair also maintains office hours and represents the department to the dean, the university, and the outside community. The successful candidate will contribute to the scholarly advancement of the department through a productive research agenda that includes grantsmanship.  Candidates should demonstrate dedication to the progress of the Music and Performing Arts Department, the School of Liberal Arts and Education, and to the University as a whole through service activities.


The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree in music earned from an accredited institution and have an area of expertise preferably in Music History; however, other areas will be considered. Preference is given to candidates with demonstrated experience in research/creative productivity and grantsmanship. Experience in and evidence of successful teaching in a university setting is preferred. Although there is an expectation of hiring at the Assistant Professor rank, we will consider filling the position at a higher rank depending upon the qualifications of the applicant.  Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.
