Hampton University is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide in-person and telehealth medical care to students at the Health Center. Works collaboratively with the health team to provide comprehensive and age appropriate care to well and ill patients. Scheduled hours are Monday – Friday; 9:00 AM- 6:00 PM and on call for emergencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide outpatient primary care services for episodic illnesses, health maintenance, wellness screenings

  • Perform examinations of patients to evaluate health and diagnose illnesses

  • Develops appropriate care/treatment plans and adjust treatment if necessary

  • Consistently develops effective care/treatment plan for assigned patients according to established protocols and procedures

  • Order diagnostic tests, such as x-rays and laboratory tests

  • Document medical information of patients and maintain electronic medical records

  • Request consultation or referral with other health care providers, such as physicians and clinics

  • Prescribes medications as needed

  • Provides information to clinical staff regarding patient's care plan and condition

  • Regularly confers and consults with appropriate supervisory physician as needed

  • Educate, instruct, and counsel patients on presenting health problems, treatment plans, and home care, and encourage and promote preventative health care and positive health behaviors

  • Actively maintain knowledge of current medical research, trends, and evidence based best practices


  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to multitask

  • Must be compassionate and personable with an interest in college health

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other medical staff

  • Ability to diagnose patients’ illnesses and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short-term management of acute and chronic health care.

  • Strong leadership skills, self-confidence, and ability to remain calm in stressful situations

  • Ability to triage mental health issues and work closely with colleagues in the Student Counseling Center

  • Ability to multitask, triage health problems, and respond effectively to medical emergencies

  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Exceptional active listening skills

  • Must work on call after-hours and weekends as need in emergencies


  • Must have a current license to practice as a nurse practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Must have current BLS CPR certification
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment
  • Must have 2-4 years of clinical work experience
