A full-time aquaculture specialist/fish facility technician position is available with responsibility for the maintenance of a 12-rack zebrafish facility. Good communications skills and the ability to work within a group is expected. The successful candidate will be a highly responsible individual and will be required to maintain the aquarium equipment and monitor water quality; familiarity with the conceptual design of an aquaculture facility would be preferred. The work involves the daily care of research animals (zebrafish) in a zebrafish facility, at Hampton University according to NIH/OLAW regulations. This will require the candidate perform the training required by the institution for working with vertebrate research animals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Training for specific duties in the daily care and breeding of zebrafish will be provided. The technician is expected to be able to observe zebrafish on a daily basis to identify any signs of illness in order to prevent disease. She/he is expected to troubleshoot and repair, where possible, issues related to the zebrafish housing upon completion of training. This individual will also help ensure that NIH/OLAW regulations are enforced to ensure compliance with these agencies and theHampton University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). He/she will meet with the PI(s) on a weekly basis to update on progress of experiments and problem  solve facility/technical issues.

Specifically, this individual will be required to perform the following duties:

1) Twice daily feedings of the zebrafish, including feeding and attention to the zebrafish nursery, as well as weekend and holiday feedings.

2) The candidate will also need to be on-call for occasional off hour duties for maintenance and repair of equipment or in case of other issues. Reliability is essential and the candidate will be required to share their mobile number with the administrative staff in the event of emergencies requiring immediate attention.

3) The successful candidate will also need to maintain/calibrate and replace, as necessary, pH and conductivity meters, pumps, filters, and other equipment related to the facility.

4) The successful candidate will also assist with other routine facility duties such as cleaning of tanks, moving of tanks/fish, and setup of fish for breeding and collection of embryos.

5) This individual will be required to maintain of certain shared, commonly used fish lines and monitor general fish health throughout the facility.

6) Keep records of zebrafish facility parameters (temperature, water pH, etc.) as well as fish health (fish census, new line and breeding records, etc.).

7) This successful candidate will ensure that fish feeding assignments are made for holidays by assembling and distributing a schedule, as necessary for days not covered by this individual.


The candidate is expected to provide at least 3 references that confirms his/her abilities and have the flexibility and social skills to work with lab personnel and the PI.


A Bachelor’s degree or 1-2 years of relevant lab experience.
