The Hampton University School of Nursing is seeking an administrator to serve in a 9-month position as Chairperson of the Department of Graduate Nursing Education. 

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically Black university located on the Virginia Peninsula in Hampton, Virginia. The School of Nursing offers Master of Science degree programs in the roles of nurse educator, administrator, and practitioner. Specialties are offered in women’s health, family health, community health nursing, advanced adult nursing, and community mental health/psychiatric nursing. There are distance education options for doctoral students whose interests focus on family and family-related research.

The master of science and doctor of philosophy programs are the first to be offered at a historically Black college or university (HBCU). The graduate program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The School of Nursing has the broad goal of improving health care and the overall quality of life in the state, region, and nation. It strives to reach this goal through the education of health care professionals through the provision of expertise, health care services, and research in the promotion of wellness.

Duties and Responsibilities

The chair is a manager who serves in the role of administrator and faculty and is responsible for overseeing all academic programs within the department.  Tasks will include teaching, conducting research, and engaging in community service. Additional duties include student advising and committee responsibilities. The candidate will work with other chairpersons and administrators in schools on the Hampton University campus in projecting the growth and development of the department and school.


The Graduate Chairperson must have an earned doctorate (PhD in Nursing preferred) as well as a master’s in nursing. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The compensation package is commensurate with experience.
