Description
Hampton University is currently seeking a highly skilled Carpentry Supervisor to supervise Carpenters and Trades Helpers in the construction, repair, restoration and installation of structural woodwork and related materials.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Recommends hiring of carpenters and helpers.

Coaches, reviews, supervises and recommend termination of assigned employees.

Plans and develop work schedules, equipment usage schedules, priority of carpentry expenditures and procedures for equipment maintenance.

Schedules, assigns and plans the work of carpentry shop personnel performing a variety of carpentry projects.

Estimates materials and labor.
-
Monitors the acquisition and use of materials.

Maintains time and material records and submits reports.
-
Trains or informs employees of new work methods or procedures, changes in safety regulations, work policies, construction codes and the like.

Interprets University and department policies to assigned personnel and enforces safety regulations and adherence to proper codes and standards.

Reviews plans and specifications for future buildings, and inspects new buildings to ensure quality and code compliance.
Requirements

High school diploma.
-
State of Virginia Driver’s License.

Significant work history as a carpenter.
Qualifications
- Hand on experience working with carpentry materials.
-
Strong working knowledge of carpentry techniques and methods, including installation and construction.

Proficient in using electrical and hand tools as well as measurement tools.

Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings and sketches and to fully grasp requirements.

Willing to comply with safety guidelines at all times.

Solid basic math skills.

Good physical condition, stamina and dexterity.
-
Ability to accurately taking measurements and calculating the size and amount of material needed for a project.

Skilled in the use of all tools necessary to cut, shape and smooth lumber and other material (e.g. fiberglass) according to measurements.

Able to build window frames, doors, and staircases using raw materials or pre-constructed items.
-
Able to install items such as hardwood floors, siding, cabinets, drywall and insulation a plus.

Skills needed to lay out flooring, roofing and drywall, ensuring they are level, plumb, and installed with as little waste possible.

Inspect products and conduct repairs or maintenance as needed.

Ability to assemble/build scaffolding and other needed construction structures.
