The Hampton University Department of English and Foreign Languages invites nominations and applications for English Composition/Film Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2018. 

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The Department of English and Foreign Languages at Hampton University houses the BA in English, MA in English (Master of Teaching) and BA in Spanish degrees. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate must be committed to teaching undergraduate courses in composition and film studies in both face-to-face and online formats. Additionally, successful candidates are expected to advise majors and minors, consult on program and course development and hold office hours. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the scholarly advancement of the department through a productive research agenda that includes grantsmanship. Candidates should demonstrate dedication to the progress of the department, School of Liberal Arts and Education, and the University as a whole through service activities.


Qualified candidates must have earned a terminal degree in their discipline. An MFA  in Film or a Ph.D. in English, with graduate course work in Film, or another closely related field, is required. Experience in and evidence of successful teaching in a university setting is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in research and grantsmanship. Candidates should also have experience in utilizing instructional technology in the classroom or online adaptations and a willingness to adopt new and emerging technologies. Although there is an expectation of hiring at the Assistant Professor rank, we will consider filling the position at a different rank depending upon the qualifications of the applicant.  Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.
