The International Office oversees all matters related to international educational programs and activities at the university. The International Office seeks out, organizes, and processes study abroad opportunities, student foreign exchange programs, and advises faculty on related grant opportunities, scholarly exchanges, and instructor-led foreign experiences.

The Hampton University international students’ community includes a high volume of students from numerous foreign countries and continents. The office houses the Designated School Official (DSO) to assist Hampton University international students in complying with regulations of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Special orientation programs and workshops for international students and scholars are provided to assist international students in maintaining their visa status as they pursue their degrees. Topics include the time frame for completing your program of study, special registrations that may be required from time-to-time; permission to work under certain authorized circumstances, travel regulations, tax information and other important matters.

The International Office serves as a one-stop service facility for the entire Hampton University campus focused on coordinating global educational outreach, international student affairs and issues, cross-cultural social activities and international academic enrichment opportunities for all students, faculty and the community at-large. In addition, the International Office offers referrals on related issues such as international student activities, community outreach, and individual and group assistance with the many cultural aspects of studying in a foreign country.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The International Office is fast-paced and, therefore, the ability to multitask effectively is essential. Work is performed primarily in an office setting and in community meeting rooms. Some work may involve visiting other sites, both on campus and off. Face to face engagement with students, families, faculty, and staff is expected.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. International Students: Interpret and implement immigrations laws, rules, and regulations with regard to international students as well as process requests for I-20 extensions, travel endorsements and travel letters; transferring international students; process Optional practical Training and Curricular Practical Training requests; respond to student inquiries and requests as well as emergencies; provide support and assistance to students, faculty, administrators and other in implementing international students’ rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; create and implement immigration orientation presentations for incoming F-1 international students; organize and attend monthly international student events on campus; promote and recruit students for International Student Ambassador program; recruit international students through various channels; and increase the number of international students attending Hampton University.

  2. Faculty and Staff: Aid faculty and staff with adherence to international student guidelines from U.S. State Department, and assist scholars, faculty, and staff with J-1 and H-1B visa procedures.

  3. General: Work with Coordinator to expand scope of international office programs, and acquire and maintain inbound portion of international partnerships and Memoranda of Understanding.



    • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field at minimum

    • Three years of experience with inbound and outbound international or related programs

    • Experience recruiting foreign students

    • Customer service principles and practices

    • Knowledge of Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)

    • Knowledge of F-1, J-1, H1-B visa rules, immigration regulations, policies, and procedures

    • Knowledge of international travel regulations under use of federal grant funds

    • Ability to generate exchange programs of high quality

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail


    • Master’s Degree

    • Knowledge of a foreign language (Spanish or Arabic preferred)
