The Hampton University School of Science invites nominations and applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Physics beginning either in spring semester 2019 or fall semester 2019.          

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located in Hampton, Virginia.  The School of Science houses the Departments of Physics, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Communicative Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Marine and Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physical Therapy, and the lnterdisciplinary Science Center.

The Department of Physics offers undergraduate and MS and PhD degrees as well as world-class research in the areas of nuclear and particle physics, optics and photonics, and medical physics.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to lead the department’s efforts to support Hampton University’s transformation from its current Carnegie Foundation classification to a research-intensive university.  Accordingly, the candidate will be expected to inspire and lead the faculty in the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and service; to review and update the curriculum; to write proposals for external funding; to advise students; to evaluate faculty; to ensure the effective administrative operation of the department; to monitor the quality of instruction of the department; and to carry out any other duties that may be necessary. 

The candidate will be expected to work with the Dean, the Assistant Dean, and/or other faculty members to develop and submit proposals to funding agencies for support of educational programs and research. The Chairperson is expected to initiate and encourage national and international collaborations that can enhance to the growth of the department.


The chairperson of the department serves as both an administrator and faculty member, and is expected to provide effective leadership in both roles.  An earned doctorate in physics and significant college-level teaching experience are required. The successful candidate must also have excellent written and oral communication skills, a history of scholarly achievement, and the ability to organize effectively. He/she must value diversity, especially as it pertains to the merits of a HBCU.
