On April 1, Hampton University presented a check for $8,235 to the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Read Cross to go toward rescue relief efforts in Haiti. On January 12, a massive earthquake struck the country, killing many people and destroying the island’s infrastructure. Fundraising has being ongoing around the world, including star-studded, televised events.

HU Student Government Association President Matthew Washington and Miss Hampton University Nikole Churchill presented the check to American Red Cross Chief Development Officer Esther Sheppard. The funds were collected after several on campus organizations did fundraisers, and after proceeds from ticket sales from a January basketball game were earmarked for relief.

“We’re thrilled that the university thought about doing something for the people of Haiti in a very unique fashion,” Sheppard said, in reference to the “Hoops for Haiti” basketball game. “We’re grateful to the university, and the students and everyone who participated.”
