During the week of Sept. 20, Hampton University was a busy with surprise visits and giveaways. On Thursday, Sept. 23, we were visited by recording artist Jeremih to promote his new album. He signed a few autographs and had an on-campus interview at our very own radio station WHOV. The next day, during our Friday 12 to 2, tickets to the BET Hip Hop Awards were given away.

12-2’s are a tradition at Hampton University. Every Friday in the student center atrium from 12 to 2pm a DJ plays music. Music is played from each region such as the DMV, the South, the West Coast, and the Midwest. People tend to treat it as a miniature party!

The BET ticket giveaway was based on a “Best Dressed” competition. The winner of the contest won a pair of tickets to the BET Hip Hop Awards. Several people were picked, by HU BET marketing rep Bradford Crump, from the crowd and selected to be one of the final four contestants. Then, sophomore Megan Schimdt was picked to be the winner. She will attend the awards show this weekend and represent her company, CupcakeMeg.

Cupcake Meg is a fundraising initiative created to assist children around the globe in areas of education and healthcare.

“My peers are sending me to the awards to have a great time and be a spectator, but to me here is a chance to network and hopefully meet some big people,” said Megan. “I want to hold some celebrities responsible for giving back to the community. Here’s my chance and I’d like to thank everyone at Hampton who cheered for me at the 12 to 2 and constant supporters of the CupcakeMeg movement. It means a lot to see people get involved in something that will be beneficial to the world.”
