Young Diplomats Program
A Week-Long Summer Residential Program (June 26, 2022 - July 2, 2022)
We bring the world to you!
Hampton University's Young Diplomats Summer Program provides a stimulating and enriching residential experience for rising 9th -12th grade high school students on the beautiful campus of Hampton University. Participants will choose academic tracks in Chinese Language and Culture, Leadership Development, Chinese Diplomacy, Economic Development and Global Affairs to learn how the United States and China respond to humanitarian issues and thereby emerge with a greater understanding of how societies help people. Students will also have an opportunity to choose their preference of recreational activities such as, horseback riding, sailing, or, fitness, and tennis.
Concerned about the limited number of options for students in the local area, Dr. Barbara LeSeur Inman, Vice President for Student Affairs at Hampton University (in 2012) suggested the development of an affordable weeklong summer program that would be stimulating and fun for students. Not wanting to limit the program to just local students, this program would be marketed across the country to interested families and students. The purpose of the program is to encourage high school students to become involved in global affairs by learning about the relations between the United States and China. The inaugural year was 2012 with an increasing interest annually.
The weeklong residential experience will be enriched by a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit sites such as the Freer Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum and the U.S. China Foreign Policy Foundation. Our staff has lined up a group of renowned political and community leaders to inspire the YDP participants to make a difference in their communities. In addition to exposure to the aforementioned activities, the Young Diplomats will practice Robert's Rules of Order and the art of debate and learn dining and social etiquette to effect change in both formal and informal settings. They will receive instruction in the waltz and salsa. All participants will have an opportunity to display their creative movements at the closing luncheon.
