Hampton University URISE Program - Previous MARC/URISE students: Where Are They Now?

Latia M. Tucker

Major: Biochemistry

"The URISE program has helped to steer my path into biomedical research. Through mentorship and encouragement to network, I discovered a passion for molecular pharmacology research. I hope to discover small molecules for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and to one day own a science company that will patent and distribute my discoveries in this field."

Jasmin L. Jeffery

Major: Biochemistry

“Being a URISE trainee has been a truly invaluable experience. Because of the URISE program I have been given the opportunity to conduct research at my dream institution and present national conferences. These experiences have helped me begin to fine tune the skills needed to matriculate into a competitive MD/PhD at a research intensive institution. Through the URISE program I have gained insights and made connections that will hopefully endure well into my future career.”

Shekinah M. Hernandez

Major: Biology

“The URISE program provides me with the opportunity to receive quality training, mentoring, and networking. I look forward to receiving hands-on experience in biomedical research, as well as the support needed to present my research at conferences. Through URISE, I plan on developing the skills needed to enter a competitive graduate school. My ultimate goal is to obtain a doctorate in biomedical sciences and work on the frontline of new discoveries and developments.”

Kennedy N. Goldsborough

Major: Biology

"The URISE program affords me opportunities that I would not have access to otherwise. Through prep courses, symposiums, and research opportunities I am better prepared to be an ideal graduate school candidate. When I graduate from Hampton, I plan to pursue an MD PhD in immunology and conduct translational research at a leading research institution while being a positive role model for other young black women interested in STEM."

Kayla S. Ingram

Major: Biology

"The URISE program has truly helped to catalyze and solidify my passion for research. This program afforded me the opportunity to engage in independent research projects that have made me more confident in my abilities to think critically as a budding scientist. My goal is to fully take advantage of the URISE program benefits so that I will be well prepared for a future career in research."

Amber B. Jones

Major: Biology

“Being in the URISE program gives me the opportunity to expound upon my understanding of what a career in research truly entails, and to further fuel my passion for learning. This program prepares me both academically and professionally for a successful future in the research field, and for that I am extremely thankful. My wish is that, upon the completion of the URISE program, I will be able to go forth confidently in my future plans to attain a PhD.”

"I wish to successfully complete the URISE program and be accepted into one of the top graduate schools in the nation for biomedical research. I believe URISE will prepare me with the necessary skills to excel in any graduate school. URISE has granted me access to valuable network connections, memorable experiences, and also a great mentor as I matriculate into graduate school and beyond."

Paige Greenwood

Major: Biology

Faculty Research Mentor: Dr. Paul Gueye, Assistant Professor, Physics

"The URISE program is amazing for giving me a chance to pursue my goal of becoming a physician scientist. With the URISE program, I hope to gain more research experience so I can be competitive for MD/PhD programs. I have gained so much confidence in myself since being accepted and I have received a lot of guidance from my mentors. I am truly grateful!"

Myron Gibert

Major: Biology

Faculty Research Mentor: Dr. Luisel RicksSanti, Director, Cancer Research Center

"My hope is that the URISE program will prepare me for a career in research in the field cellular and molecular biology, computational biology, or bioinformatics. My ultimate career goal is to be the PI of a lab or to be a college professor (or both). After I graduate I plan on entering a PhD or MD/PhD program in one of the listed fields.

A personal goal I have is to find a way to bridge my interest in computers and my interest in science and make a career out of it."
