HU Observes Denim Day to Bring Awareness to Sexual Assault

Hampton University recognized Denim Day 2011 on April 19 with planned events that included a Sexual Assault Awareness Fair, and a panel discussion called “A Survivor Speaks.” Members of the organization Survivors Not Victims (SNV) were on the panel along with members of the HU Student Counseling Center, and other organizations.
The HU-Fighting Violence Against Women Project was funded last year to the university from the Region III Office of Women’s Health. Denim Day at HU is a symbol of the university community uniting against sexual assault of women, girls, boys and men.
Internationally, Denim Day is a recognized campaign during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.
Denim Day was created to raise public awareness about rape and sexual assault. It began as the result of a Supreme Court case in Italy, in 1998, where the high court decided to overturn a rape case conviction where the judge declared the victim was partly to blame for wearing tight jeans.
Faculty and staff at HU were encouraged to wear denim jeans and a teal ribbon to symbolize the day. The day’s events also included short skits on healthy relationships and a balloon launch in recognition of survivors.
