Trumpeter Derrick Gardner '87 Performs at HU

Derrick Gardner, HU Class of 1987, returned to his alma mater for an amazing night of jazz on April 8 at Ogden Hall. Derrick Gardner and the Jazz Prophets performed numerous top-flight jazz pieces from their various albums as well as unreleased tracks from their upcoming album. Inspired by the finest hard-blowing, funky bop bands of the 1960s, Gardner has performed in the Count Basie Orchestra, Frank Foster’s Loud Minority Band and Harry Connick Jr.'s Big Band.

HU Students Win Honors at Genesis 2011 Artist Awards

Two Hampton University students were honored at the Genesis 2011: College Student Juried Exhibition at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center (Pfac) on April 8.  Marie E. Jarrell won first place for "4 Views of Growth" a digitally enhanced linocut.  Jarrell received $300 in honor of Mayor Ann Kilgore by Ed Kilgore.  Jeromyah Jones received Honorable Mention for his piece "Soulyah" using clay.  Jones received a prize of $50.

HU Professor Wins at LA WebFest 2011

Hampton University Assistant Professor Phill Branch, Class of 1994, received several awards at the Los Angeles Web Series Festival (LA WebFest) in March.  Branch's web series, "The PuNanny Diaries," won Outstanding Dramedy, Directing and Guest Star.  The show competed against nearly 150 web series selections to earn these distinct honors.

The Hampton University Army ROTC Pirate Battalion hosted its 63rd Annual Military Ball on April 8 at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel in Hampton, Va.  Guests enjoyed fun, food and dancing.  The department welcomed Col. Xavier Brunson, HU Class of 1990, as the ball's guest speaker.

Department of Political Science and History

Assistant Professor Sharrieff DeJohnette hosted a Hip Hop Symposium on April 21.  The discussion centered on the influence of oral history on hip hop music, analyzing the lyrics in modern hip hop music.  The event welcomed several panelists, including 103 Jamz’s DJ B*Ryte, EarthGang, JID and EuroGold.

J-School Welcomes Starcom Ad Agency

Elise Brown, HU Class of 2010, returned to her “Home by the Sea” on April 22 to talk to journalism students about Starcom MediaVest Group.  Brown, who serves as a Starcom Media associate, shared her experiences with the Chicago-based advertising agency in her first year following graduation.
