Growth: The Department of Chemistry continues to expand the curriculum offerrings with the recent addition of the degree option in Biochemistry. Three degree options are now offered--the B.S. in Chemistry (ACS certified), the B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Forensics and the B.S. in Biochemistry.
Starting in the Fall of 2009, the Department of Chemistry began offering a B.S. degree in Biochemistry. In the past ten years, more than 80% of Hampton University chemistry graduates have pursued postgraduate training in graduate school or medical professional schools and our expectations are that as the fields of molecular and cell biology continue to integrate the sciences of immunochemistry, neurochemistry, and bioorganic, bioinorganic and biophysical chemistry, our students will continue to express a strong interest in these expanding career options. Technology: Technology continues to add new dimensions to the curriculum with computer assisted instrumentation and molecular modeling. These activities bring computers into use in most laboratory activities. As an example, students enrolled in undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratory recieve instruction on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometry using specialized software to interpret spectral data. Molecular modeling programs are used in research and undergraduate Physical Chemistry. Read More about technology »
